Will of JOHN BATE of HOUGH END ,
WITHINGTON. 1686.

In the name of god Amen the eleventh day
of Aprill Anno Dom 1686 And in the second yeare of the Raigne of
our soveraigne Lord James the Second By the Grace of God of
England Scotland ffrance And Ireland King defender of the faith.
I John BATE of HOUGH END within Withington in the County of
Lancaster yeoman beinge weake of Bodie But of sound and perfect
Memorie thanks Bee to Almighty God And calling to remembrance
the uncertaine Estate of this Transitory life and that All flesh
Must yield unto Death when it shall please God to Call doe make
constitute ordaine And declare This my Last Will and Testament
In Manner and forme ffollowinge, Revokinge by theire presents
All and Every Testament and testaments will And wills heretofore
by mee made And declared Either by Word or Writinge And this is
to bee Taken only ffor my Last Will and testament And none
other.
And ffirst I Give and Committ my soule into the hands of
Almightie God my Creator Trustinge And Assuredly beleivinge
through the merritte of Jesus Christ my deare Redeemer to bee
Eternally saved. And my bodie to the Earth ffrom whence it was
Taken to bee buryed in such devout and Christian manner In the
Church or Churchyard of Didsbury As to my Executor hereafter
herein named Shall bee thought meet And convenient.
And now ffor the settlinge of my Temporall Estate And such goods
Cattells and Chattells And Debts As it hath pleased god to
bestowe upon mee I doe order give Devise bestowe And bequeath
the same in Manner and forme ffollowinge. That is to say, ffirst
I will that my Debts if any such bee At the tyme of my Decease ,
(?) my funerall Expences And the probate of my Will, shall bee
well and truly Contented And paid out of my whole personall
Estate within Convenient tyme after my Decease by my Executor
hereafter herein named.
Item my will and Mind is And I Give And bequeath unto my sone in
Law Aron HOLLINPREIST the summe of ffiftie pounds ffor the
payment whereof I have Already Given him Security by Bond.
Item I Give And bequeath unto my Sone in Law Edward WORSLEY And
Mary his wife the summe of Twenty five pounds.
Item I Give And bequeath unto my daughter Katherine ATHERTON
widdowe the summe of Twenty five pounds.
Item I Give And bequeath unto my sone William BATE the summe of
one hundred pounds of Lawfull Money of England.
Item ffor All the Rest Remainder And Residue of my Estate it is
my will and mind And I give and bequeath the same to bee Equally
Divided betweene my sone William Bate and Katherine Atherton my
daughter part and part alike Provided Already(?) and
nevertheless that the said Aron Hollinpreist, Edward Worsley,
Katherine my daughter and my said sone William Bate doe well and
truly pay unto mee yearly and every yeare duringe the terme of
my naturall life the summe of twelve pounds In manner and forme
ffollowinge That is to say the sume of three (five crossed out
below) pounds At and upon the ffirst day of Jannuary, the like
summe of three (five crossed out) pounds upon the twenty fifth
day of March which said two payments Are At nett(?) in Arear And
unpaid, The like sume of three(five crossed out) pounds upon the
Twenty fourth day of June next ensueing the date hereof and the
like sume of three (five crossed out) pounds upon the twenty
ninth day of September.
And Alsoe the said Aron, Edward, Katherine and William payinge
the said sume of twelve pounds one yeare after my decease upon
the afforesaid dayes And (?) to my Executor hereafter herein
named The same to bee paid ratably (?) and proportionably
Amongst them Accordinge to the severall portions And legacies
hereby Given and bequeathed unto them.
And it is my further will and mind And I doe hereby order that
if any person or persons to whom I have hereby Given and
bequeathed Any Legacy and sume of money shall offer to disannul
or make void this my last will and testament that hee or shee so
doeinge shall loose his or her part.
And Appoint my Lovinge sonne William Bate to Bee the Sole And
Whole Executor of this my last will and testament Trustinge hee
will Truly Execute the same In Witness whereof I the said John
Bate have hereunto set my hand and seale the day And yeare
ffirst abovewritten.
Sealed, signed published and ordained by the Abovenamed John
Bate to bee his last will and testament in presence(?) and
witness of the Word (three) four tymes interlined before the
enfoalinge.
