NOTES:
It is notable that Cicelie gave no
legacies to any Barker or Charlton. All of Cicelie’s bequests
seem to be to her side of the family, especially the family of
her first husband, William Jenyns (Jenings), and to her family,
the Leightons. Rowland's first wife was Cicelie Charlton and
confusion over two wives named Cicelie! Cecelie Charlton died
January 1, 1582/83. Cicelie (Leighton) Jenyns was the second
wife of Rowland Barker.
"Cecilia uxor William Jenyns (Jenings) of
Walliborne, renupta Barker." Cicelie's sister Elizabeth (d. 16
May 1606) married Sir Thomas Scriven of Frodesley (b. abt. 1522,
d. 22 Nov 1587). Their sister Eleanor married Thomas Heneage.
Her brother Thomas Leighton, Governor of Guernsey married
Elizabeth, daughter of Catherine Knollys and niece of the
infamous Lettice Knollys. Elizabeth was the granddaughter of
Mary Boleyn and niece of Anne Boleyn.
The parents of Cicelie Leighton were John
Leighton and "Jocosa" (other places, Joyce), daughter of Edward
Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley, (c. 1460-31 Jan 1531/32), per The
Visitation of Shropshire 1623. However, Genealogica Et
Heraldica, Vol. II, 1877, names her father as Sir Edward
Leighton of Wattlesborough! More research needed here, but
seems more likely that Edward and not John Leighton was her
father. John is said to have died in 1532. Cicelie would have
to have been born before that, which would mean she was more
than 20+ years older than Rowland Barker!
Sir Thomas Leighton was Governor of
Guernsey (1570-1609).
Sir Edward Leighton, Esq. was sheriff of
Montgomery in 1592.
Richard Leighton, Esq. of Gwernygo,
Montgomery, was sheriff in 1599.
Edward Phipps, gentleman, married Mrs.
Joyce Jenyns 20 Apr 1590.
Anne Leighton, daughter of Thomas, married
John Jenyens.
Sir Thomas Leighton was buried 1604.
Dame Elizabeth Leighton, widow of
Wattlesborough, was buried 1620.
Thomas Clough, gentleman, and Rebecca
Jenings married 21 Dec 1591.
The wife of Edward Scriven, of Frodesley,
Sara or Sarah, was buried 17 Oct 1624.
Jane Scriven married Evan Davies on
January 26, 1602/03. (St. Lucia, Upton Magna).
Condover parish registers (Litchfield
Diocese) list several births, marriages and deaths of Scrivens.
