The Will of Peter Archbell

 

In the name of God Amen, I Peter Archbell of Tadcaster in the West Riding of Yorkshire, being weak of body but sound of memory doe give my body to the ground and my soul to God that gave it and my body to be buried in Tadcaster churchyard decently at the discretion of my wife.

Imprimis: I give unto my son Peter Archbell of Bilbrough, all my working tools belonging cordwainer trade, and vialin, a pair boots, one shilling in money in full of his portion.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Archbell one bed in the garrett and the bedding their on belonging two, one woolwele, two cists, one of the orice* head and a little one in the garrett, three chairs and two stoules in the house, one pan, the bigger of the les sort, half a dozen of trenchers, two little pewter dishes and two plates, one pewter salt, one pair of sheets that belonged two her mother and a pair of pillowbears, one little table with a drawer in it.

All the remainder of my houshold goods and personall estate I give unto my loving wife, and this my last will and testament whereunto I have set my hand the 12 day of February 1733.  Peter Archbell

This will passed the seal [fixed] the 11th day of March 1734

 

  • ‘orris’ can be a fleur de luce or a piece of lace – make what you will of that!

 

Woolwele is probably a wool wheel, or spinning wheel.

 

Cist is a chest or kist
