This will runs for
five pages of tight
script, so I have just
summarised the names and
bequests below.
In
the Name of God Amen, I
William Appleby of Great
Braxted in the County of
Essex, farmer, being of
sound and disposing mind
and memory thanks be to
to God for the same
hereby revoking all
former Wills by me made,
I do declare this to be
my last Will and
Testament in manner
following.
First I give to my dear
wife Ann Appleby one
annuity or clearly year
sum of fifty pounds for
and during the term of
her natural life
I
appoint unto my dear son
William appleby and his
heirs all that my
freehold and copyhold
estate called Great
Tricketts or otherwise
situate in the parish of
Tolleshung Dragons
otherwise Tolleshung
d’Arcy and Tollesbury in
the said County of Essex
and all other my
freehold and copyhold
messuages farms lands
tenements and
hereditaments whatsoever
and wheresoever with
their and every of their
appurtenances , the said
William to pay a yearly
sum of fifty pounds to
my said wife Ann Appleby
during the term of her
natural life.
And further I do charge
my said lands and
hereditaments with the
payment of Twenty pounds
a piece to my daughters
Ann the wife of Thomas
Beckwith, Mary the widow
of John Wood Fairhead,
Elizabeth the wife of
William Brown, Sarah the
wife of James Thomas
Belcher, Hannah Appleby
and Charlotte the wife
of John Hinsum Millbank
to be paid to them
within twelve months
after the decease of my
said wife by my said son
William Appleby.
And I do ratify and
confirm unto my said son
William and my said
daughters Ann Mary
Elizabeth Sarah Hannah
and Charlotte the
several and respective
sums of two hundred
pounds each which I gave
to them in my lifetime
and I do will and
declare that they shall
not be called to account
for the same to or by my
Executors hereinafter
named.
And I give and bequeath
unto Jacob Howell
Pattisson of Witham in
the said County
gentleman and Joseph
Lake of Rivenhall in the
said County farmer my
Executors herein after
named all and every my
personal and chattel and
leasehold estates (long
list of types of
possessions which they
are to dispose of and
invest the income to pay
the bequests, followed
by lengthy instructions
on the inheritance of
each daughter)

published and declared
by the said William
Appleby the Testator as
and for his last Will
and Testament in the
presence of us who in
his presence at his
request and in the
presence of each other
have hereunto subscribed
our names as Witnesses –

A
Codicil was signed on 30
Jan 1838 increasing the
amount to be paid to
each of William’s
daughters to seventy
pounds apiece.

A
further Codicil was
signed on 2nd
November 1838 following
the marriage of Williams
daughter Hannah to
Charles Drury Millbank,
clarifying her
inheritance. Witnessed

to Pattison and Cutts
sols of Witham
Proved at London with
two Codicils the 22 Apr
1839 by the oaths of
Jacob Howell Pattisson
and Joseph Lake the
Executors to whom admon
was granted having been
first sworn duly to
administer.
