Furness Mining Employees 1847-48

Industrial records have long since been available in Record Offices everywhere, but are little used in our search for our forebears. Indeed, Barrow Record Office holds an enormous archive of such material, especially for Vickers. Instead of the more usual lists of employees, however, the examples given below identify not only the employee, but also his children of school age. The data was supplied to John Cranke, the Steward to his Grace, the Duke of Buccleuch around the year end of 1847 in order to answer questions raised by Rev James Morgan, the curate of Dalton. Morgan, in a letter to the Duke of Buccleuch. Rev Morgan complained that “the fatal practice of drinking has also ruinous effect on the labouring classes [of Dalton]. Indeed to so great an extent is the practice of intemperance carried as to form, I may almost say a characteristic note of the Country [district].”

This view was refuted, of course, by the mine owners.
