Directory of Ulverston 1843

We have all used Directories and are most familiar with the ‘pay for entry’ Directories such as the Lancashire Directory (Baines, 1824) or The Directory of Cumberland and Westmorland (including Furness (Parson and White, 1829). It wasn’t until the end of the century that local Directories, such as the Furness Year Books, became more universal in their inclusion of inhabitants as they did not pay to be included. Nestling among the archives within Barrow Record Office is such a publication giving the majority of the tradesmen and professional inhabitants of Ulverston for 1843. As it is unusual, it is reproduced in full below.

Neil Hudson

November 2007

[1] Cumbria Record Office, Barrow in Furness, BDX 491.

[2] The printer (D Atkinson of King Street, Ulverston) clearly ran out of various letters when setting the type for printing. He routinely used a capital I for a capital J. Other, non-capital letters used tended to be their italic form.

[3] Buried 3 July 1843, aged 64 years
