Day & Date Formula

To find the day on which an event took place given the date use the following:

                                                                       Thomas Riley - d.o.b. 18 November 1910

  1. Take the last 2 digits of the year [10]

  2. Add ¼ of this number ignoring any remainder - ie. 10 divided by 4 = 2 remainder 2  [10 + 2 = 12]

  3. Add the date of the month i.e. 18 [12 + 18 = 30]

  4. For the month add the following:  January  = 1 or if a leap year = 0; February = 4 or if a leap year 3; March = 4; April =0; May = 2; June = 5; July = 0; August = 3; September = 6; October =1; November =4

      December =6 [30 + 4 = 34]

  1. For the century add the following: 18th = 4; 19th = 2; 20th = 0; 21st  = 6

      [34 + 0  = 34]

  1. Divide the total by 7 and the remaining number gives the day of the week as

Follows: 1 = Sunday; 2 = Monday; 3 = Tuesday; 4 = Wednesday; 5 = Thursday; 6 = Friday; 0 = Saturday.

                 Therefore 34 divided by 7 gives 6 as a remainder, therefore  Thomas Riley was born on
